According to an article I just read in Forbes Magazine, the government shutdown will affect getting an approval on your mortgage loan. Of the four reasons they state, two are of particular interest to me: No New FHA Case Numbers are being issued and the IRS isn't staffed well enough to provide a borrowers Income Tax Transcript which needs to be verified by underwriters before a loan approval is issued.
I have had experience with FHA backlogs and I know without an FHA Case Number, an appraisal of the property being purchased cannot be ordered. Back when things weren't so strict, I had seen where appraisals were ordered, completed, then re-written once the FHA Case Number was issued. As far as the IRS not being staffed well enough to provide a borrowers Income Tax Transcript, this could cause delay in obtaining your approval as well.
